This original oil painting was created en plein air at Vesper Meadow, a private conservation and restoration property in Southern Oregon. It shares a border with the Cascade Siskiyou National Monument and is breeding ground for the endangered Vesper Sparrow.

Sarah Burns packed this painting into her french easel backpack and hiked half a mile or so in to make this painting in the fall of 2019. She worked on it for several sessions. Painting outside means working quickly since the sun moves pretty rapidly and it also means talking to people, dealing with bugs, wind etc. This piece was painted during late summer/early fall.

”I am a big traditionalist when it comes to materials. This piece is painted with excellent oil paints on a linen panel, and then varnished with a matte varnish made of turpentine, damar and beeswax. With minimal care this painting will outlive us all.” Sarah
